Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) rose from humble beginnings to become a self-taught lawyer, an astute politician, and the sixteenth president of the United States. Lincoln led the country through the Civil War (1861-1865) and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring the freedom of southern slaves. His second term as president came to an untimely end with his assassination in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth.
