Description
Ambrose Everett Burnside (1824-1881), whose facial hair coined the term “sideburns”, was the original creator of the Burnside carbine rifle, and brigadier general in the Rhode Island militia during the Civil War. After he was relieved of his command in 1865, he became a railroad executive and Governor of Rhode Island from 1866-1869. Later, he served as Senator of Rhode Island from 1875 until his death.
