Portrait after Gilbert Stuart. George Washington (1732-1799) was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and the first president of the United States. Washington visited Newport's Touro Synagogue in 1790 and later wrote a letter to the synagogue which has become renowned for emphasizing religious liberty in the new America.
