Description
Stephen Van Rensselaer (1764-1839) was Lieutenant Governor of New York (1795-1801), and the heir to one of the largest estates in the New York region at the time, making him the tenth richest American of all time. He founded the institution which became Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
