Portrait after Thomas Sully. Patrick Henry (1736-1799), American orator and patriot famous for saying “Give me liberty or give me death”, served as a member of the Continental Congress (1744-1776) and twice Governor of Virginia (1776-1779 and 1785-1786). He, along with Samuel Adams and Thomas Paine, is regarded as one of the most influential champions of American independence.
