Description
General Jacob Brown (1775-1828) was born a poor Quaker in Pennsylvania, and rose to become the Commanding General of the United States Army. He advised the secretaries of War and the President on military policy, and was highly respected by his contemporaries. The day he died, President John Quincy Adams wrote: “General Brown was one of the eminent men of his age and nation. Though bred a Quaker, he was a man of lofty and martial spirit, and in the late war contributed perhaps more than any man to redeem and establish the military character of his country.” This portrait was the last one painted of General Brown.
