Description
George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894), was a close friend of Jane Stuart and a prolific portraitist in Europe and America. He opened his first studio in Boston at the age of eighteen. His first two commissions were for the local butcher, to pay his bill, and for his landlord, to pay the rent. Fortunately, his humble beginnings led to great success – he was an honorary member of the National Academy of Design and wrote a book called Reminiscences of a Portrait Painter in 1864.
