Mary “Polly” Lawton (1761-1793) was born in Newport to great wealth. She was introduced to many prominent men during the Revolutionary War, including George Washington and Rochambeau, all of whom vividly remembered and remarked upon her beauty, grace and piety, earning her a place in colonial history.
