Description
Joseph Hurlbut Patten (1801-1881), born in Newport, was the son of Reverend William Patten and Hannah Hurlbut. He graduated from Brown University in 1819, studied law with Samuel W. Bridgham, the mayor of Providence. After admission to the bar he practiced law in Newport (1821-28) and New York City. He was an inventor of some prominence and wrote scientific articles for Silliman's Journal in New Haven.
