Description
An oil on panel allegorical painting entitled "Amphritite Abducted by Neptune" by Jean Honore Fragonard (French, 1732-1806) after an oil sketch by Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640) entitled "The Abduction of Proserpina" (c. 1614-1615). The painting depicts Amphitrite in distress being pulled into a chariot by Neptune, the chariot tramples a female figure on the ground, and figures on the left of the canvas, one of which is dressed in centurion armor, seek to help Amphitrite. The background of the scene is done in tones of grey and yellow. On the reverse the panel is marked with royal inventory seals and the dealer label which reads "Thomas Agnew and Sons LTD. #27604. 43 Old Bond St. Piccadilly-W."
