The early career of painter Anna Richards Brewster (when she differentiated herself from her poetess mother by using "Jr."), involved illustrating books. The new rendition of Alice in Wonderland was written by her mother, Anna Matlack Richards, Sr.
Brewster studied at the Cowles School in Boston and later in Europe; her father, William Trost Richards, was "a constant source of instruction and encouragement to her."
