Notes
Emily Burling Waite had her first solo show at the Art Association of Newport in 1917, showing both portraits and etchings. A talented, astute and prolific artist, originally from Worcester, Massachusetts, she was educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, under Edmund Tarbell and Philip Hale among others, and spent a period at the Art Students League in New York before receiving a traveling scholarship to Europe. Her areas of specialty were ones by which she could make a living: predominantly portraits and etchings. She exhibited in the annual exhibitions of the Art Association of Newport through the 1950s and in the 1960s was still corresponding with Art Association secretary Ilonka Roberts about selling her etchings. In the 1920s, Waite resided in Newport when she was married to Arthur Williams Manchester, whose portrait hangs in the Griswold House at the Newport Art Museum.
