Notes
The acquisition of Hanging Rock Sunset initiated the Newport Art Museum's goal of acquiring 100 significant works of art to represent 100 years of service to the community, during the 2012 Centennial. This glorious representation of one of Aquidneck Island's most enduring landmarks has precedents in the many landscapes painted in our region by some of the nation's most important artists. Sue McNally explored this idea in her 2009 exhibition "Picturing Paradise," with her 21st century interpretations of some of the most scenic locations in the area Newporters call Paradise.
In the works of Sue McNally, "George Quincy Thorndike's Hanging Rock and Martin Johnson Heade's Seascape: Sunset were the inspiration for this version of Hanging Rock. For me, these paintings represent the freedom that a painter has to embellish what is seen. The scale in Thorndike's painting is greatly exaggerated, as is the color and ideal beauty in Heade's sunset. I took the opportunity to embellish, and make my own version of Hanging Rock with an exaggerated mackerel sky.
