Notes
Artemis, Greek goddess of the hunt and moon, leaps across the sky in this famous sculpture by Paul Manship. She is being chased into darkness by her brother, Apollo. Manship used this classically elegant female form as an allegory of the passage of time. He translated his thorough study of classical Greek and Roman art into a streamlined, stylized, modern art form. As one of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's stable of modern artists, Manship came to Newport to exhibit his work in a solo exhibition at the Art Association of Newport in 1917.
