Picturesque etchings of the North Shore in Massachusetts were Charles Woodbury's earliest work in the medium. In the spirit of James McNeill Whistler, these works were carefully drawn, with parallel markings creating tonal effects. By about 1905 Woodbury's technique changed drastically to the slashing linear technique that evoked an image in a few lines.
