Richard Mayhew is an African-American/Native American landscape painter who was part of Spiral, which included Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis and Hale Woodruff. He obtained a degree in art history from Columbia and studied art at the Brooklyn Museum and Pratt Institute. In 1959 he received the John Hay Whitney fellowship which took him to Italy for a year (date of this work). He taught at many colleges and at Penn State from 1977 to 1991.
