Woodbury took his son David to see the newly constructed Panama Canal, in 1914, probably as a diversion to the recent death of his wife and David's mother, painter Marcia Oakes Woodbury. He made a number of sketches, which were in a more tonal technique, reminiscent of his earlier style, than his contemporary etching technique.
