Notes
A native of Massachusetts, William Drury studied both at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1915 he arrived in Newport to head the art department at St. Georges School and at the same time became active at the Art Association of Newport, now the Newport Art Museum. From 1951 to 1960 Drury was president of the organization, and this gallery is named in his honor.
Drury was a longtime friend and student of the artist Charles H. Woodbury. The two vacationed together in the West Indies, sketching the scenery. Drury was intrigued with ships and sailors and is noted for his many watercolors and etchings of the subjects.
