This portrait of Mary McKinnon, an artist who did fashion drawings for Harper's Magazine, is a study in fluid shapes and strokes, giving full range to Bellows' gestural drawings skills. Bellows achieved a richness of tone in his lithography, which was very apparent in his depictions of elegant costume. His models sometimes dressed in old-fashioned garments, giving him the opportunity to display his velvety blacks and satiny sheens. Mary McKinnon, later Mrs. John De Vries, was a friend of Bellows
