Julius Ludovici painted portraits and landscapes, had a studio in NYC and later in California, but Newport knows him for his pencil drawings of scenic Conanicut Island (Jamestown, RI), where he visited in the 1880s. He is listed in the City Directory as having a studio and business on Bellevue Avenue. Ludovici first studied art in Antwerp, Belgium, before coming to the United States in 1851. He then returned for further study in Munich and Dresden, before settling in New York City and ultimately California. He was well known as a portrait painter and musician.
