Notes
Jane Stuart has presented Mrs. Little, née Anita Chartrand, posed as a Madonna; she is veiled and holds her rosary and her partially draped infant son. The child in the picture is William McCarty Little (d. 1915), who grew up to be an important figure at the Naval War College in Newport. Little's daughter, Florence, was the second wife of the painter Edward Darley Boit; she died in 1902, after giving birth to two sons, Julian McCarty Boit and Edward Boit. The boys were brought up by the above Captain Little and his wife.
Stuart, who apprenticed with her father, Gilbert Stuart, went on to maintain studios in Boston and Newport, becoming the sole support of her mother and sisters after his death. While she adeptly completed her father's pictures, her own work often suffers from a lack of professional training. Jane Stuart was an eccentric personality in Newport, as well as a frequent guest of Jane Emmet Griswold, here in the family's home.
