Newport Harbor

Edward Seager was the first professor of drawing at the newly organized U.S. Naval Academy in 1850. Born in Maidstone, England, Seager emigrated to Canada with his family by 1832, and had become a master in the art of pencil and watercolor drawing. He m married in Baltimore in 1841 and settled in Boston in 1844. He became an art teacher whose reputation earned him the post at the Naval Academy. Early in the Civil War the U.S. Naval Academy was evacuated from Annapolis and moved to Newport for the duration of the War. Professor Seager completed his career at the Naval Academy in 1867. After leaving Annapolis, he moved to Baltimore, travelled and made drawings of Niagara Falls, landscapes in New Hampshire and Switzerland.
