Marion Carry (1905-1987) was born at 12 Friendship Street in Newport and lived there her entire life. Fresh out of the Rhode Island School of Design in 1926, where she studied with John Frazier, in 1927 she began to assist Helena Sturtevant in her classes at the Art Association. In 1931 she spent a semester at the Art Students League, in New York City, but returned to Newport to continue teaching, eventually becoming director of the school. The Art Association raised funds for its first and last traveling scholarship, to send Carry to Europe in 1938 and allowed her to take a leave of absence during World War II to do drafting at the former Naval Torpedo Station in Newport. In a letter of thanks to the Art Association Council in December 1937, prior to her European travel, Carry wrote: "May I tell you, too, how grateful I am for the opportunity to paint and teach painting these last twelve years."
