Notes
The drawings and prints of Stephen Fisher, who exhibited his Gothic Landscapes in the Newport Art Museum's "Prints and Pots" in 1985, have evolved in their intricacies, from earlier almost minimal compositions to more complex presentations. Fisher takes drawing to a new level; his exquisite still lifes and landscapes approach a photographic realism but they are instead a tour de force of technical brilliance and intricate craftsmanship. The recognizable objects in his still lifes seem to be there for the technical challenges that they pose: the blades of a fan in front of venetian blind slats, the surface nuances between a stone Buddha and a human hand... His landscapes are now filled with tangled trees. A professor of art at Rhode Island College since1990, Fisher holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA from Yale University.
