Notes
Serene waters and luminous light transform the billowing sailboats in this European harbor scene into spectral images that float across the water. The harmonious composition and colors are characteristic of Colman, a versatile artist who painted Hudson River School vistas of the West, pioneered in the medium of American watercolor, and later turned to design, working with Louis Tiffany in decorative interiors. Colman lived in Newport in early 1880s in a house designed by McKim, Mead and White.
