Portrait of Ethel Cushing

Ethel Cochrane Cushing, with her alabaster skin, almond shaped eyes and long golden red hair, was the favorite model of her husband, artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, for whom the Cushing Memorial Gallery at the Newport Art Museum is named. Known as a painter of elegant portraits in his early career, Cushing moved to New York City and under the influence of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's circle, developed a unique decorative style, based on his Orientalist inclinations as well as Art Nouveau. More of his work is on view in the Cushing Gallery, across the Museum's courtyard.
