Notes
Karl Bodmer is most well known for his studies of Native Americans and the American habitat, which he made while on an extended expedition into the American West. On his return to Europe he was associated with the Barbizon School of painting, which advocated a more natural, poetic approach to depicting the land. Bodmer was a favorite of the esteemed art historian and author Philip Hamerton, who wrote in The Portfolio "The bird or the beast is always the central subject for Bodmer, but he generally surrounds them with a graceful landscape, full of intricate and mysterious suggestions..."
