Notes
The Cushing family's inheritance from the China Trade is evident in the Asian motifs of wallpaper and many Chinese vases in their Newport summer home, The Ledges. Of interest in this painting of Ethel and their young son, Howard, Jr. is Cushing's portrayal of a real, spontaneous moment in the manner of the French Impressionists: in a room with a diagonal perspective, a woman with her back to the viewer coaxes her son. And yet, Cushing seems to render the entire scene a delightful still life, espousing his love of ornament and color, as well as attention to light and shadow.
