Probably John Townsend (1732-1809); descended to his daughter Mary Townsend Brinley (1769-1856); by descent to her nephew & heir Christopher Townsend (died 1881), 1856; by descent to his sister Ellen F. Townsend (1809-1887), 1881. Ellen Townsend then bequethed it to her friend, William P. Sheffield (1857-1919) in 1886. By descent to his son, William P. Sheffield, Jr., 1919. The chair then descened to Sheffield's sister, Mrs. Charles Renn ( nee Elizabeth Sheffield), after 1937 but before 1965; acquired from her by the Newport Restoration Foundation.
