“LES TROIS AMIS” (French, 1887) by Charles Chaplin (French, 1825-1891), in this portrait a three year old Harold S. Vanderbilt holds two kittens and a basket of flowers. Painted and exhibited in Paris in 1887 by Charles Chaplin, who was known for his elegant paintings of young women. William K. Vanderbilt ordered this portrait of his son through the decorating firm Jules Allard & Sons. The canvas is housed in the original carved and gilded oak Rococo style frame designed and executed by Jules Allard.
