Description
A pair of large oil on canvas paintings (both c. 1848-1850) attributed to Yeuqua (Chinese, active 1840 – 1870) showing reverse views of Canton. The pair are framed alike in varnished wood molding. 1 - Canton: The harbor and island as viewed from the water with many native vessels including an elaborate state barge, vessels at anchor and underway. 2 - The Hongs: The waterfront with numerous native vessels at anchor and underway in the foreground. Foreign concessions surround the Anglican Gothic Revival church (erected 1847), depicted before the fire of 1856.
