Description
VENETIAN SCENE (French, 1923) by Emile Bernard (French, 1868-1941). The scene depicts a view along the Ca' dei Schiavoni at twilight. People in cloaks linger to view moored gondolas and lateen-sail rigged fishing boats at quayside. The background depicts the Doge's palace and the columns of Piazza San Marco. Across the water, the spires and dome of the church of Santa Maria Della Salute loom over the Dogana (customs-house), and on the left La Guidecca. With the play of gray and black, the mood of the painting suggests a somber winter day. It is signed on lower right: "Emile Bernard Venice 23."
