Description
A bronze preliminary study or maquette entitled "Force" (American, 1916) by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (American, 1875-1942) cast by Valsuani. "Force" depicts a nude male caryatid standing on a marble base. Shown in an early Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney exhibition at the Newport Art Association in 1916, six casts of this caryatid were eventually made. This work helped to establish Mrs. Whitney's reputation as a sculptor as well as a patron of the arts.
