Description
A lamp (Chinese, retailed by Edward Farmer) made of porcelain, depicting a seated figure under a white tasseled shade. The man is represented wearing a green flowing robe and matching hat, his right hand holds a belt with orange medallions while he rests his left hand on his knee. He likely represents a Song Dynasty official, identifiable by his belt and headpiece. The combination of white, green, and amber glazes is known as sancai, or "three colored," glazing, which was developed in the late 7th century and remained popular due to their ease of production, versatility, and affordability. Carved of gilded wood, the base of the lamp is a late Ming roof tile mounted by Edward Farmer Farmer specialized in mounting period Chinese porcelains as lamps during the 1920'S-30'S and the shade bears his label.
