Description
A nutmeg grater (English, Birmingham, dated 1800) made of silver by Samuel Pemberton. The oval grater features two conforming lids, one opens to a holder for the spice while the other opens onto a grater. One lid is decorated with a simple pointed border with the initials “JD” monogramed within it, the other features the same monogram within a pointed oval dashed border and stylized acanthus leaves. Stamped under the lid are five marks: the English strident lion, the Birmingham anchor, the “C” letter date for 1800, “SP” for Samuel Pemberton and a final unidentified and obscured mark.
