Mug

A mug (British, dated 1769) made of silver by John Langlands I, of Newcastle. The body of the mug is embossed with a rococo decoration of floral and foliate designs and two cartouches, while the inside is gilt. An inscription under the cup reads “DAVID KING MAITLAND ARMSTRONG FROM HIS GODFATHER GEORGE BARCLAY RIVES”. At the base of the cup are a series of stamped marks. At the center of them is the makers mark for John Langlands I, “I. L” beneath a circle. Above that is the Newcastle hallmark of three castles within a badge and the British passant lion silver quality mark. Below Langland’s mark is a date stamp of “C” in script, marking the piece as being made in 1769, and the crowned leopard standard mark.
