Description
A commemorative medallion (French, 1889) designed by Jean-Baptiste Daniel-Dupuis (French, 1849-1899) celebrating the Exposition Universelle held in Paris in 1899. One side reads “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE” across the top and shows the bust of a classically styled woman in profile. The other depicts a seated classical female figure crowning a male nude figure, symbolizing the arts, and a boy holding a torch on her side, across the top is “EXPOSITON UNIVERSELLE”, and in the background is the Eiffel Tower and Exposition grounds, below the figures is “PARIS 1899” and a star. Both sides are signed “DANIEL DUPUIS”. The Eiffel Tower was unveiled at the Paris Exposition of 1899.
