Description
A mahjong set (Chinese, 19th century), made of ivory and veneer on wood. The box of this mahjong set is topped with gold stenciled Chinese characters; when opened the inside of the box has four small compartments and one main compartment to organize gaming pieces. The tiles are decorated in blue, green, and red ink and feature both Chinese and Western alphabets. A booklet included with the set is titled “Standardized Score Chart of the American Code of Laws for Mah Jong” and was copyrighted in 1924 by John M. Smith Publishing Corp. of New York.
