Florentine Urn

A Florentine urn (Italian, late 19th century) made of white marble, attributed to E. Arrighini. This grand urn is elaborately decorated with depictions of abundance and revelry. The upper section of the urn is draped with a garland of fruit and has two winged female figures at the handles, paired with two frolicking child satyr musicians. Below them is a circle of ten dancing, music-playing Bacchic putti entwined in a long swath of fabric amongst scattered musical instruments, jugs, quivers and grape clusters. Supporting the urn at the four corners of a raised molded octagonal pedestal are by two male and female satyrs, and ribbon tied bouquets of fruit and shields. The upper portion has the ability to swivel on the base. The entire piece rests on a conforming, orange-colored marble base. Original to The Elms Conservatory.
