Crinoline Figural Group

A Crinoline figural group (German, late 19th century) produced by the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, after the model "Lovers at a sewing table" by J. J. Kändler (German, 1706-1775). This piece, which was original to The Breakers, features a scene of a man leaning over to kiss a woman as she works at her sewing. The man wears a robin-blue coat and breeches over a floral waistcoat which accents the woman’s wide crinoline and bodice in a Deutsche Blume pattern. She sits on a Rococo style chair at a sewing table that holds her handiwork and the man’s tricorn hat while a small pug sits at their feet. The scene rests on a mound base with gilt edging and includes gilt accents throughout. The underside is marked with two crossed swords in blue underglaze, impressed with the number "59", and is incised "No. 551."
