Pair of "Strawberry Mansion" Steuben Glass Urns

1931-1939

A pair of "Strawberry Mansion" glass urns (American, 1931-1939) designed by Frederick Carder (English, 1863-1963) for Steuben Glass, Inc., Corning, NY. The inverted bell-shaped urn features a swag and tassel motif cut into the rim, handles on either side, and sits on a base cut with eight lobes and a florette on the underside. The bowl of the urn is engraved with a spread-winged eagle behind a sun design in the Federalist style. The eagle holds the stems of a floral vine in its beak which circles the sun, the bottom of which depicts a floral wreath and ribbon design. The "Strawberry Mansion" pattern was adapted by Carder after a late 18th century design on a goblet found at Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion. The pattern was created to celebrate the restoration of the house, an early act of historic preservation in America, Steuben Glass produced this pattern from 1931-1939. The undersides of the urns are marked "Steuben".
