A Charles II Armchair

c. 1670

A Charles II armchair (English, c. 1670) composed of carved oak with a caned back and seat. The arched crest rail is centered by a pierced crown flanked by leaf carved S-scrolls. This design is repeated around the rectangular caned back, on the middle rail, and on the front stretcher. The spiral and block turned back posts are carved with floral sprigs and topped with crown-shape finials. The leaf carved armrests end in scroll handles and are raised on spiral supports above a caned seat within a seat rail carved in a leaf motif. The whole is raised on four legs, the front two are in the form of an S-scroll carved with acanthus leaves, the rear are spiral and block turned. The legs are connected by four cross stretchers, the front described above, the side and rear are block and spiral turned.
