War of 1812 Commemorative Pitcher

19th century

A War of 1812 commemorative pitcher (English, Liverpool, 19th century) decorated on both sides with transferware portraits of American naval commanders. The creamware jug has a strap handle and is trimmed in black. One side of the pitcher/jug depicts a bust portrait of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819) against the background of a frigate, cannons, flags, and bayonets, inscribed above him is his famous 1813 quote from the Battle of Lake Eire “We have met the Enemy; and they are ours. / PERRY”. On the other side is a bust portrait of Captain Jacob Jones (1768-1850), he is set against a similar backdrop of naval/military trophies and above him is inscribed “Captain JONES of the Macedonian”. Produced in Liverpool, England, commemorative jugs/pitchers of this type are often referred to as Liverpool jugs.
