Description
A plate (English, 1882) decorated in the Aesthetic Movement taste, manufactured by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons. The majolica plate is decorated in a Japonesque design, the left side of the plate is decorated with raised cherry blossom branches and palm fronds against a white ground, the right side of the plate is decorated with a bumblebee and yellow butterfly against an incised crosshatched patterned ground. These two designs are asymmetrical, with the decoration on the left side taking up about 2/3 of the plate. The rim of the plate is edged in light brown. The underside of the plate is impressed “WEDGWOOD”, along with the date code “GVK”, indicating an 1882 production date, and numbered in red “M3092” above “1/2”.
