Description
A S.Y.P. (“Simple Yet Perfect”) Ceylon Teapot (English, 1907) made by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons. The exterior is decorated in a blue on white peony transfer pattern. The doomed lid has a banner which reads “THE CEYLON TEAPOT” below its knob handle. The underside of the teapot is impressed “PATENT / S.Y.P. / WEDGWOOD” and with the date code “3VJ”, indicating a 1907 manufacture date. Also printed on the underside is “PEONY / TRADEMARK / WEDGWOOD”, the word trademark is set against a hanging garland.
The unique design of the teapot was developed by Douglas Cochrane, 12 Earl of Dundonald (1852-1935). Tea leaves brew in the built-in infuser shelf beneath the doomed lid as the pot lays on its back, it can then be tilted halfway up to drain the hot water from the infuser, finally you sit it upright ready to pour.
