Description
A black jade censer (Chinese, 20th century) of pagoda shape composed of four sections, raised on a carved wooden base. The rounded base of the censer stands on four legs with detailed Tao Tei mask motifs. Around the masks are handles in the form of reticulated phoenixes with two carved rings mounted beneath a wide flaring rim carved in shallow relief with stylized dragons. Each of the stacked portions is consecutively smaller, each is carved with openwork double phoenix motifs and has four handles with carved rings. At the top is a domed lid with a final of four repeated handles and rings.
