Description
An oil on canvas painting entitled “Landscape with Ox Carts” (American, mid-late 19th century) by Marcus Waterman (American, 1834-1914). The painting depicts two white oxen pulling a cart in an agricultural landscape painted in muted tones, another cart follows behind them and farm buildings are in the background on the right. The canvas is signed “M. WATERMAN” on the lower left corner.
Marcus Waterman was an American painter born in Providence, RI. A graduate of Brown University, not much is known about his early artistic training, though he appears to have worked with William Morris Hunt. Waterman traveled widely across the U.S., Europe, and Alegria, and moved to Italy in 1900. He is best known for his landscapes, Orientalist scenes, and illustrations for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Snow-Image: A Childish Miracle.”
