Description
An engraving entitled “New Laid Eggs” (English, 1875) by Samuel Cousins (English, 1801-1887) after a painting of the same name by Sir John Everett Millais (English, 1829-1896), published by Thomas Agnew & Sons, London. The engraving depicts a young woman with a basket on her arm collecting eggs from a chicken coop, she is shown in profile at three-quarter length with her face turned toward the viewer. Inscribed below the image on the left is the painter’s signature “John Everett Millais” and the engraver’s signature “Samuel Cousins” on the right. The print is housed in a molded gilt frame with black decoration in the Eastlake style. Original to Chateau-sur-Mer.
The original painting by Millais was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1873. The model for the painting was his daughter, Miss Effie Millais.
