Forty-Eight-Piece Dinner Service

Description
A partial forty-eight-piece dinner service (English, c. 1880) made by Minton (English, founded 1793) and retailed by Thomas Goode & Co., London. Designed and commissioned for William K. and Alva Vanderbilt, the service would have been in use at their New York residence at 660 Fifth Avenue. The pieces of the service are decorated with an outer gold border, an inner gold scalloped border, and the monogram “WKV”, for William K. Vanderbilt (1849-1920), in a gold foliate script against a white ground. The service is comprised of:
.1-27 = Twenty-seven dinner plates (dia. 10.25")
.28-38= Eleven salad plates (not pictured)
.39-43= Five soup bowls (dia. 10.5")
.44-46= Three crescent-shaped condiment dishes (9.5" x 6.5" x 1")
.47 = A cake stand (2.75" x 9.25" x 9.25")
.48a-b= A covered soup tureen; a = tureen, b = cover (not pictured)
The pieces are marked on the underside with the maker’s and retailer’s mark which reads “T. GOODE & Co / LONDON/ MINTONS CHINA” below a crown in purple. They are also marked with individual gilder’s marks in iron-red.
