A portrait relief of William Shepard Wetmore (American, 19th century) by an unknown artist. The subject, William Shepard Wetmore (American, 1801-1862), is depicted in profile, at bust length, looking right, with long sideburns. The relief portrait is housed in a shadowbox frame with ebonized foliate marquetry decoration. Original to Chateau-sur-Mer.
William Shepard Wetmore commissioned the building of Chateau-sur-Mer from architect Seth Bradford between 1851 and 1852. Wetmore made his fortune in commercial shipping and the “China Trade,” which imported teas, silks, and other goods from Asia to North and South America and Europe. With a well-established fortune, he retired at age 46.
